The New York Weekly Journal was the first independent political newspaper in America. The publisher was John Peter Zenger. During Zenger's trial his attorney, Andrew Hamilton, said how can the printed articles be libelous if they were true. At the time English law protected the government from criticism. So the truth couldn't be use as a defense for libel. The jury exonerated Zenger anyways, this action laid down the foundation to freedom of press.
